I taught photography to the 30 children there who are cared for by TRUST. The children were given disposable cameras and asked to photograph the things that were most important to them. I wanted to give the children an opportunity to express themselves using a new and exciting medium. I wanted them to have fun, but also to take the project seriously. I wanted to encourage their sense of discovery by asking them to think about the things that mattered to them. And I hoped that the project in some small way would be a therapeutic exercise to help them through their massive personal traumas. As a child, I drew endless faces, characters, strange animals and scenes. My mum used to get stacks of paper from the local butcher (who used it for wrapping meat) as I would get through piles of it. As a teenager, I went through a little dark phase of drawing sometimes angry, violent things and people would look confused and say ‘but he’s such a nice boy?’ Later I attained a B.A in art and design in London where I specialised in Illustration and Photography. After that my desire to record the world visually then led me to travel extensively and I created journals and books of my journeys. I’ve also regularly attended life drawing sessions and workshops to further my practice. I felt it was a great way to understand the essence of photography as a drawing with light. It can also help understand the principles of shutter speed and aperture. Basically, a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole at one end and film or photographic paper at the other.” www.photo.net I have always loved the look of a Pinhole photograph – the aged aesthetic and how the long exposure captures atmospheric elements. I also like the look I get from passing strangers, observing a man trying to hold a box very still for some time.
