Liquid Light.

Liquid Light is a silver-gelatin liquid emulsion designed to be easily applied to any material. Printing with Liquid Light is the same as with black-and-white enlargement paper. Under an amber or red safelight, brush the emulsion onto the surface to be coated. Wait a few minutes for it to firm up, then expose with an enlarger or slide projector.

I became aware of Liquid Light at art school when I specialized in photography. I fell in love with the medium after watching a tutor print an image onto an egg. I would spend hours and days in my tiny cupboard darkroom in London practicing painting the emulsion onto different papers and printing my photographs. I like the painterly appearance of images caused by the application with a brush, and I feel the raw aesthetic suits the rugged NZ landscape. I enjoy the element of surprise when using the technique in the darkroom.
